A couple neat iPhone tricks

by moose

So I’ve been playing with my Eurofrench iPhone and discovered some neat tricks… here’s 3 of them:

  • Fast delete: when you want to delete some longish text, say in Mail, just keep the BACKSPACE key pressed and it will delete characters repetitively. Keep it pressed for some time and it will start deleting word by word instead of letter by letter.
  • Changing the text auto-suggestion dictionary language: I use a French iPhone, so whenever I type some text, I get suggestions of matching French words… but what if I want to type an email in English? It keeps suggesting French words… unless you go to Settings>General>Keyboard>International keyboards and select some more languages (the French iPhone has English, UK English, French, German and Italian (yes, the iPhone HAS NOT been released in Italy… yet). Then when you go in an app where you can type text, you will see a globe icon key on the left of the SPACE bar: hitting it toggles the keyboard to another language (e.g. QWERTY for English) but, better, also toggles the dictionary language, so you get suggestions in the chosen language. Pretty nifty.
  • Back to top of the page in Safari: When you are all the way down a looong web page in Safari and you want to go back to the top of the page, say for entering a URL into the address bar, instead of scrolling like hell all the way up, you can simply double-tap the upper part of the screen, right below the page’s title bar. It will instantly bring you back to the top of the page

So, that’s three tricks I found out while using the iPhone, if you have any more, tell me and I’ll update the list.
