Rip: Xbox 360 HD DVD Drops To $50:

Now that Microsoft has officially announced the death of their HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360, the only thing left to do is to sweep the technological corpses out of warehouses

Hmm, I wonder who would buy it now? Maybe to watch all these “buy one get 15 free” HD-DVD movies in the “fire sale” section?

At $50 it is a pretty decent DVD read-only drive that is powered by the USB port. It could be used with any old mac to add a USB 2.0 DVD-reader (regular movies and/or OS/software DVDs).

Maybe you can find cheaper ext. read-only DVD drive solutions, but $50 is pretty close…

I’m not sure whether that device can be used with anything else than a 360… I’m not even sure that the 360 uses standard USB ports actually.

OK, I checked, it does use standard USB ports ;-)
And you can use it on a PC or Mac: http://uneasysilence.com/archive/2006/11/8303/
Actually, the Mac does not even need drivers, it “just works” although there’s no software for palying HD-DVD discs on the Mac so you are stuck with standard DVDs.
