Newsfire now free… as in beer!

So, how do you fight back to NetNewsWire being available free of charge? Well, when you sell Newsfire, you make it free too.

NewsFire… the news starts here!:

Today’s a big day for NewsFire. After much internal debate, I’ve made the decision that as of today, NewsFire is totally free. No feature restrictions, no ads, no cut-down ‘lite’ version… this is the real deal.

I hope David Watanabe has found some sort of financial deal somewhere, because at least NNW was bought by a company that can get their money back somewhere else. Newsfire has been my news reader of choice for quite a while, but the thing that made me switch to NNW, rather than it becoming free, was the fact that it features the awesome sync between the desktop and the - free - Newsgator online account, which means that when I read some of my RSS on my MacBook Pro, they get marked as read on my online account, so that when I want to check what’s new on the road on my iPhone, I get only stuff that I haven’t already checked. And vice versa. Very smart. The thing I miss from Newsfire? The simple, no-nonsense GUI. The other thing I like in NNW? The tight integration with MarsEdit.

I have not. It remains true indie software, for better or for worse.

So, it’s basically a loss-leader for you? You get revenue from the other software, like Inquisitor’s add-supported model? Or do you have a regular paid job and do your indie dev as a “side project”?
