Wordpress Blog on home mac

by Nate

I have relatively speedy DSL (512 mbps upload) and a nice Beige G4 1GHz to use as a server (although it only has 10BT… should I put in a 10/100BT card?) so I decided to host a blog.

The instructions are here. It’s really easy, even though I don’t have a static IP, I was able to use the DDNS feature of my router and DynDNS.com to give myself a domain name.

Here’s the final result. That’s a custom header image with “Amsterdam Nights” as the wordpress theme/template.

Questions, comments welcome.

A whopping 50% of my referrals have come from here, yet no one is willing to tell me whether I should put a 10/100BT card in the Beige G4 to speed it up!

Personnally, I think it is really fine. I am in the US and using Safari it did not take more than 5 seconds. However, Europe is right now sleeping…

A blog should not require a huge bandwidth.

    Hello Nate,
the alst 3 days I have been trying to visit your blog, first day was ok for the homepage, but wishing to post a comment was impossible, server did not respond. yestgerday nothing worked, but today everything is fine and smooth, so from Europe it seems ok, but still to be confirmed by a couple of other tries.

That’s probably because I have the server set to shut down for a couple of hours in the dead of night Pacific Standard Time. Once I start getting increased traffic I probably should move to a real server, but I like this for now, as it’s completely free.

    not entirely free I guess,
you have to pay your internet connection ;)
what is your internet connection speed (up and down)?

  6. Nate Says:

    SBC Yahoo DSL
2.5 mbps down, ~512 kbps up

Upgrading PHP helps a lot speedwise.

No upgrading your card won’t help. If your download speed is less than 10mb, how could upgrading to 100mb help? It will only help if you are transfer files locally.
