Is Windows/Office getting slower with each new version?

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008, by moose

Over at InfoWorld, Randall C. Kennedy wrote an interesting review. He tested the performance of various flavors of Windows and Office on different PC configuration.
His conclusion:
Fat, fatter, fattest: Microsoft:
The conventional wisdom regarding PC evolution, that Microsoft devours every Intel advance, continues to hold true right up through the current generation of Windows Vista and Office [...]

Apple’s support for legacy applications going down the drain

Thursday, April 17th, 2008, by moose

The terrible news came this morning through Apple’s Kbase RSS feed:
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard does not include support for iPhoto 2.

Oh my! I so liked the way you could go for a cup of coffee while iPhoto2 tried to scroll through the couple thousands 2 megapixel images I had in my Library.

Ever wondered where the Dashboard layer goes when it moves up?

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008, by moose

Hmm, you know Dashboard, when you click that “+” icon at the botom left, it moves the whole black layer up, “pushed” by the aluminum strip which allows you to choose what widgets you want to add?
Well, have you ever wondered where the upper part of the Dashboard layer goes? Yeah right me too…
And here [...]

Ars technica reviews Safari 3.1 for Windows, like it a lot

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008, by moose

Safari 3.1 on Windows: a true competitor arrives (seriously):
When 3.0 beta came out, it behaved like the Mac version, only allowing you to resize from the bottom-right corner. Apple heard the pleas. The Macintosh manufacturer wants Windows browser market share, and both Microsoft and Mozilla should be concerned now that Safari 3.1 shows that Apple [...]

EMC to release new version of Retrospect for Macintosh as Universal Binary

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008, by moose

As I mentioned in my previous post, EMC (formerly Dantz) Retrospect is a serious, industrial-strength backup solution, that I have been using at work for quite a while, for backing up a mix of PCs and Macs.
Problem is, the Mac version has been languishing for literally years: the Mac version is 6.1 and has been [...]

Extensive in-depth look at Time Machine’s innards

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008, by moose

If you are curious as to how Time Machine does its magic, you might want to take a good half hour to read the lengthy piece by Sven-S. Porst.
X.5 Time Machine (Quarter Life Crisis):
The impression I get from this – my limited experience spanning a few months and the reports I read – is the following: Time [...]

iPod spotted onboard the space shuttle! [updated]

Saturday, March 15th, 2008, by moose

Looks like some astronauts get bored when they go a-flying above our heads, so they need some music to kill time.
Look closely on the picture below, taken probably from one of Endeavour’s mechanical arms or an astronaut:

Yes, it’s a (3G I think) iPod in there…
(via Engadget)
[update: I stand corrected by Xavier who, in [...]
